Frequently Asked Questions

Adopting FAQ

Why should I adopt rather than just go buy a dog?

There are so many great dogs that face euthanasia each day in the pound and kennels. Not only does buying a dog mean that another one in the pound will have to be put down, but it also keeps abusive puppy mills and pets stores in business.

Isn’t there something wrong with the dogs from the pound?

Absolutely not. There’s something wrong with the people that put them there.

How long does the adoption process take, and what’s the procedure?

Depending on the dog and the foster’s schedule, the process can be as quick as 2 days and as long as 3 weeks.

The first step is to fill out an application. Once we review it, if we think you may be a good match for the dog, we’ll do a brief phone interview. Then you’ll go see the dog at its foster home. After you meet the dog, if you decide you’d like to adopt it, then call Posh Pets or email us to let us know.

Please note that even if you go see a dog at a foster home, it is no guarantee that you will be able to adopt it. Sometimes many people go to see the same dog, and we make the decision of who will get it based on the right fit for the dog.

How much and why does it cost to adopt a dog?

Our adoption fee is $250, $350 for a dog under 1 year old. This fee covers medical expenses, boarding facilities, trainers, and costs involved in fostering the dog.

What if my adoption doesn’t work out?

The contract states that you must try everything to remedy the problem, including trainers. If it still doesn’t work out after that, you must give Posh Pets Rescue adequate time to re home animal. You CANNOT give it to a shelter or a friend: it must go back to the organization. If a friend is interested in adopting the dog, they can fill out an application.

I want to adopt. What do I do now?

Fill out an application and email it to Posh Pets. If you want to follow up with a call, that’s great too.

I’m looking for a specific kind of dog, can you help me find it?**

At this time we can’t provide a dog search service, but keep checking the site – we add new dogs each day.

I sent an application in for a dog but never heard back, what’s up with that?

Sorry. Sometimes we get too many applications and we don’t have the time to go through them all. Please keep checking the site and looking for another dog you may be interested in.

Will my dog be microchipped?

Most often yes. This implant allows vets and shelters to identify the owner of the dog should it ever get lost.

Fostering FAQ

What does it mean to “foster” a dog?

A foster home is a home (like yours!) that provides temporary shelter, care and love for pets while they are awaiting placement in a new “forever” home. Foster pets are much more likely to have successful life-long placements in new homes when they come from a loving foster home, than when coming directly from the shelter. You will keep your foster dog until it gets new adoptive parents.

What makes a good foster home?

If you’ve had some experience with dogs before, have a basic understanding of their needs, and a touch of common sense, you’re a good foster candidate. Our animals are looking for a little love, walks, meals, and a safe space. If you think you can give this to an animal, but may not yet be ready to commit to having one yourself yet, you should consider fostering.

Who pays for expenses?

Posh Pets will pay expenses and reimburse you for vet bills and medicine, transfer/transportation, and, if necessary, food. If you wish to provide the food to the foster pet at your own expense, it will help Posh Pets rescue focus its monies on care for other needy animals.

Can I choose what kind of dog I get?

In the foster application, you can tell us what kind of dog would work best for you, and what kind of dogs you’re willing to take on. Giving us a range is best – specify size, age, allergy requirements, or any other relevant details.

We are especially in need of foster homes for bigger dogs, so if this is a possibility for you, please consider doing so.

What if it doesn’t work out?

If there is a problem with your placement, we will move the foster dog. Please allow us a day or two so we can find a new place.

How long will I have my foster?

It varies. Younger, smaller dogs get adopted quickly – from a few days to a few weeks. Larger dogs and older dogs usually take longer up to 2-3 months, occasionally longer.

Can I foster more than one?

Sure – first start with one, and when you’re sure you can handle it, we’ll be happy to hand over a second (and third!).

As a foster, how am I involved in the adoption process?

When Posh Pets receives an application for your dog, we will then contact you so that you are aware an applicant will be calling to set up a viewing time to meet the dog (at your convenience). Some people may want to bring their other dogs to see if they get along with the foster pup. Posh Pets then relies on its fosters to provide feedback about the applicant they have met – to help determine if he or she could be the right home for your foster pet. Sometimes many applicants will come to see your foster pup, and you may be asked to recommend what you think is the best home.

If my foster gets adopted, can I get updates on him/her?

Yes. We try to keep the foster involved as much as possible, even after a successful adoption. Often you’ll get emails and pictures from your foster’s new parents.

But I’m afraid I’ll get too attached…

All fosters go through this. But you can reassure yourself by knowing that the dog is going to a good home, and that you are now free to save another lucky dog.

What if I fall in love with a dog and want to keep my foster pet?

You’re treated as any other applicant, and must go through the adoption process including filling out an application (and paying the adoption fee, in some cases). Posh Pets may decide that you’re not the right fit for a permanent home for the dog. It’s a case to case decision.
